The Rural America Project

2018, in collaboration with Anne Marie Wirth Cauchon, Co-founder & Editor-in-Chief of Stillpoint Magazine

The Rural America Project was a research trip to Northern Minnesota carried out in 2018 with Anne Marie Wirth Cauchon, which eventually lead to the founding of Stillpoint Magazine. The research included taking a large amount of photographs which recorded fragmentary, passing observations during our conversations, interviews, and visits with people, within a small rural area of the state. The visual result is an anonymised survey of the environments and objects encountered during these conversations.

At the time, the future publishing project of Stillpoint Magazine was yet to be realised; but the work carried out during this research phase was fundamental to setting its core principles. The work considered the psyches of contemporary life within ‘Middle America’, and the way this could speak to, relate to, or isolate from, the psychological experiences of life elsewhere. Stillpoint Magazine eventually became a digital publication grounded in the concept and practices of community psychoanalysis. It curated artists and writers to uncover what is behind the self, exploring collective, multiple, radical, inclusive, and hidden truths.
